Aww isn't that lovely. Young love...
NOT that kind of date...silly goose!
Medjool Dates to be exact, otherwise known as the most amazing snack on the planet, in my humble opinion at least. I seriously don't know where these wrinkly little balls of delight have been all my life!!
What is it?
Wiki says, " Phoenix dactylifera (date or date palm) is a flowering plant species in the palm family Arecaceae, cultivated for its edible sweet fruit. Although its place of origin is unknown because of long cultivation, it probably originated from lands around Iraq. The species is widely cultivated and is naturalized in many tropical and subtropical regions worldwide."
They've been around for thousands of years, dating back to around 7000 BCE {{no clue when that even was, don't judge me}}. They have lots of protein and fiber, making them a perfect little vegan snack. Although, they do contain quit a bit of natural sugar, so consumption in moderation is a must.
Fun Facts:
1. Since they are high in fiber, they keep you feeling full longer.
2. They have 50% more potassium than a banana, which helps boost your energy and build muscle.
3. They are almost completely fat, sodium and cholesterol free.
4. Just 2-4 dates a day can serve as the recommended 5 portions of daily fruit and vegetables. '
5. Since they are made of natural sugar, they can help you fight your sweet tooth. Instead of calorie busters like ice cream, chocolate and candy, choose a few dates.
If all else fails and you still really don't care to try one, just think of all the confusing sentences and conversations you could have with your friends about dates vs DATES.
Dates can be found at most grocery chains in the produce section and/or online. Here's a coupon for $2.00 off Natural Delights Dates.
